Breakfast Examples

  • Breakfast burrito: 1 whole egg, 1 egg white, peppers, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, any other non-starchy veggies, Canadian bacon (or ham or turkey sausage), part-skim mozzarella cheese, 1 flour tortilla. 30g carb in tortilla

  • ½ cup oatmeal made with water, sweetened with low-calorie sugar substitute (like Splenda), 1 ¼ cup berries – add a protein source

  • 1 cup plain, 0% fat, Greek yogurt, 1 ¼ cup berries, ground flax seed

  • 2 slices whole wheat toast with peanut butter and low sugar jelly, 1 whole egg and 1 egg white, turkey or chicken sausage

 

 Lunch and Supper Examples

  • Lettuce and non-starchy vegetable salad with low-fat dressing, 1 cup cooked spaghetti noodles, ½ cup meat sauce.

  • Steamed non-starchy vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower), 1 small baked potato (or 1/2 sweet potato) with skin with 2 Tablespoons sour cream, 1 small pork loin or skinless chicken breast (grilled, broiled, baked), 1 fresh fruit (apple, pear, orange), 1cup skim or 1% milk.

  • 2 slices whole grain bread, turkey slices, low-fat cheese slice, tomato, lettuce, mustard, lite mayo, 1 fresh fruit or 1 ¼ cup berries, 1 cup skim or 1% milk.

  • ½ cup pinto or black beans, 2/3 cup cooked rice, 1 corn tortilla, chicken breast (grilled, broiled, baked), lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro, fresh lime juice, salsa.

  • 1 cup cooked rice, 3 ounces’ fish (the size of a deck of cards), lettuce salad, steamed asparagus.

  • 2 slices whole grain bread, 2 slices of cheese, ½ cup tomato soup, side of veggies, 17 small grapes (1/2 cup).

  • ½ cup tuna fish with 2 Tablespoons of light mayo, 14 saltine crackers, 1 small pear, 1 cup skim or 1% milk.

  • 6” turkey submarine sandwich with veggies, mustard, light mayo, 15g carb worth of bagged chips.

 

15 to 20-gram Carbohydrate Examples

  • 1 small apple, pear, orange

  • 3 small graham cracker squares (3/4 of a sheet) with peanut butter

  • 7 saltine crackers with peanut butter or low fat cheese

  • 1 light, flavored, low-fat yogurt

  • 1 cup plain, 0% fat, Greek yogurt with ½ cup raspberries

  • 1 cup flavored 0% fat Greek yogurt

  • 1 cup skim or 1% milk

  • 50 sugar snap peas in pods, raw

  • 15 baby carrots, raw

  • 3 cups popped popcorn

  • 14 pretzel sticks

  • 2 Tablespoons raisins

  • ¼ cup sherbet

  • ½ cup vanilla ice cream

 

 No or Low Carbohydrate Snack Examples

  • Celery and peanut butter

  • Part-skim cheese stick

  • 15 to 20 almonds or walnuts

  • Sugar free gelatin (Jell-O) (not pudding)

  • Raw veggies (celery, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli) and low fat dressing

  • Dill pickles

  • 1 cup raw or ½ cup cooked vegetables (excluding corn, peas, potatoes, and winter squash)
