Making an Increased Calorie Formula

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Enfamil AR: 24 calorie/ounce

Powder:

5 ounces (150mL) of water + 3 scoops of Enfamil® formula powder

 How to make the formula:

  • Make sure your countertop and utensils are clean.
  • Wash your hands well with soap and warm water.
  • Check the expiration date of formula before using. Throw out outdated formula.
  • Carefully measure out 5 ounces of clean water into your baby’s bottle or another clean container.

It is not necessary to use sterile water unless:

  • tap water is unsafe
  • tap water is drawn from a well
  • you are told to do so by the doctor

  • Use the scoop provided with EnfamilAR formula to measure 3 scoops of Enfamil AR powder into the water.
  • Shake formula or use a hand mixer until blended.
  • Once mixed, formula may be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

What to do Before You Feed Your Baby:

  • Warm the formula by setting the bottle in warm water. DO NOT warm breast milk in the microwave.
  • Test the temperature of the formula before feeding.
  • After feeding the baby throw away any formula that is left in the bottle.

Do not change your formula recipe unless your doctor or dietitian tells you to. This formula is used only for a short time. It is usually stopped after 4 to 6 weeks. Your doctor or dietitian will help you stop this when your baby is old enough.

Tell your doctor if you see that your baby poops often or has watery poop.
